Since 1935, Washington has been home to the National Cherry Blossom Festival. It begins on the 3rd Saturday of March each year and runs for 3 weeks. In 1912, the cherry trees were offered as gifts from Japan to the city of Washington to celebrate the growing friendship between the two countries.
